答案﹕我認為主要的因素就是雷德跟布什總統的關係。布什總統又希望找一個他熟悉的人﹐而且要比較了解中國的人。雷德具有很多年在中國和香港的工作經驗而且講一口流利的中文。他對布什總統來說是一位中心耿耿的老朋友。雖然前任美國大使暴理赫作得不錯﹐但是雷德比較符合布什總統的理想人選。

雷德大使多次到過中國。他說，“中國二十几年來發生的變化是巨大的，無法想像的，可以用成語”滄海桑田”來形容。”根据這篇文章的內容或你自己的經歷，請你談談:1974年与現在比較起來，有哪些巨大變化?
答案﹕1974年以來﹐中國發生的變化是巨大的。在中國大陸﹐以前在路上放眼望去都是單車﹐而汽車很少。餐館幾乎是沒有的﹐只有一些政府開的餐館。我不清楚什麼時候開始有﹐不過我知道到了九十年代初﹐已經有了一些餐館﹐也有了很多的小攤子。現在餐館很多﹐小攤子也很多﹐但是也有很多地方被拒絕。七十年代的中國社會對外關閉﹐毛主席的思想的影響力很深刻﹐中國人民與外國人的接觸很少。
台灣也經過了翻天覆地的變化﹐從戒嚴時代被控制的報紙和拒絕的黨派﹐到了現在很開放﹐熱鬧的政治性強的社會。真是生氣勃勃的民主社會了。台灣還經過了一些別的很大的變化﹕環境意識現在比以前強很多﹔台北市現在有地鐵捷運系統﹔因此﹐台北也有很多新發展區。
